Your WPPI week deserves a finale like this.

Forty-five minutes from the Las Vegas Strip, a landscape of towering red sandstone, dramatic textures, and otherworldly formations becomes your outdoor photography playground. Add a team of professional models, two experienced instructors, and a small group of photographers who are there to create—not just watch—and you've got a day you'll be talking about long after WPPI is over.

15 photographers maximum. Four or more professional models. One spectacular location. Zero sitting in the back of a classroom.

What will you experience?

A full day of hands-on portrait photography, professional models, dramatic locations, creative challenges, and personalized instruction from two photographers who have spent decades working with people and light.

You're not coming to collect another notebook full of theory. You're coming to make photographs, experiment with new ideas, solve real lighting problems, and leave with images you're excited to share.

THE LOCATION: Valley of Fire State Park

Imagine 46,000 acres of blazing red Aztec sandstone, sculpted formations, sweeping desert views, and textures that seem to change with every step. It's the kind of place that makes you want to grab your camera before you've even left the parking lot.

Valley of Fire gives us an incredible variety of environments for portrait photography—from expansive landscapes to intimate rock formations and architectural-looking natural features.

Panoptic Photography Workshops has 10 years of experience organizing photography experiences at the Valley of Fire, and we plan our shoots around approved locations and the conditions of our park permit. That means you can concentrate on making photographs while we handle the workshop logistics.

This isn't about taking the same postcard shot everyone else takes. It's about learning to use an extraordinary location to create portraits with impact.

THE MODELS: Real People. Real Direction. Real Results.

We're planning for 5+ professional models, with a range of looks, styles, and on-camera personalities.

These are experienced models who understand how to work with photographers, respond to direction, and bring energy to a shoot. You'll have opportunities to practice directing someone you've just met, communicate your vision, and make the most of a short shooting window.

Whether you're creating an editorial-style portrait, an environmental image, or something entirely your own, you'll have the opportunity to build images for your portfolio.

And no, you don't have to be the loudest person in the group to get great results. We'll help you find your voice behind the camera.

THE INSTRUCTION: Two Photographers. Decades of Experience.

Steve Batz

With more than 20 years of professional photography experience, Steve photographs just about anything involving people—from portraits and events to editorial and commercial work. A Westcott Top Pro, national magazine contributor, and co-founder of Panoptic Photography Workshops, Steve has helped thousands of photographers develop their skills through hands-on education.

Mark Behrens

Mark brings more than 20 years of portrait photography experience, with a particular passion for dramatic environmental portraits. Also a Westcott Top Pro and co-founder of Panoptic Photography Workshops, Mark brings a creative eye for shaping light, working with locations, and building portraits that stand out.

Together, Steve and Mark have helped more than 5,000 photographers through Panoptic's workshops and educational experiences.

Here's what matters most: we're not interested in making 15 photographers produce 15 copies of our photographs.

We'll share our techniques, explain our decisions, help you solve problems, and encourage you to experiment. Our goal is to help you develop your own creative vision, not simply imitate ours.

THE EXPERIENCE: A Full Day of Making Photographs

We will be visiting 4+ VERY unique locations throughout the park.

Is This Workshop for You?

This experience is a great fit if you're:

  • A photographer who wants more editorial-style portraits in your portfolio.

  • A portrait photographer ready to take your work beyond the studio.

  • A photographer attending WPPI who would rather spend a day creating images than another day sitting in conference sessions.

  • An intermediate or advanced photographer who understands their camera and wants to become more confident with lighting, posing, and location work.

  • Someone who wants to experiment, meet other photographers, and return home with fresh ideas.

This probably isn't the right workshop if you're:

  • Looking for a classroom-style presentation with little hands-on shooting.

  • Expecting to stand in one spot and fire off hundreds of frames without thinking about light, composition, or direction.

We welcome different shooting styles and experience levels within the intermediate-to-advanced range. Come ready to learn, share, experiment, and have a good time.

Frequently Asked Questions

I'm coming by myself. Will I feel awkward?

Not at all. Many photographers attend workshops on their own. You'll be spending the day shooting, learning, and sharing ideas with a small group of people who already have something in common with you: a love of photography. You don't need to arrive with a friend to feel part of the group.

Can I bring a second shooter or assistant?

This workshop is limited to 15 registered photographers. To protect everyone's shooting opportunities and stay within the event's approved capacity, each participant must register individually. Additional assistants or non-shooting guests require advance approval and cannot be assumed to be permitted.

What if I register and then can't attend?

Reservations are nonrefundable. You may transfer your registration to another person, subject to organizer approval, applicable deadlines, and any permit-related requirements.

Will the workshop be too basic or too advanced for me?

If you're comfortable shooting in manual mode and understand the basics of exposure and lighting, you're in the right ballpark. We'll work with the group's experience level while keeping the day focused on practical, intermediate-to-advanced techniques.

What happens if the weather is bad?

We monitor the forecast and will communicate any significant changes. If conditions make the planned experience unsafe or the park closes or restricts access, we'll follow the applicable park requirements and communicate the available options under the event's cancellation or rescheduling policy. We won't promise a rain-free day in the desert, because Mother Nature doesn't take reservations.

Do I need to bring my own models?

No. Professional models are part of the planned workshop experience. You bring your camera, your ideas, and your willingness to experiment.

Do I need expensive lighting equipment?

No. Bring the gear you own and know how to use. If you have off-camera flash, triggers, or modifiers, bring them if they're practical for the locations. We'll discuss lighting decisions and demonstrate techniques using suitable equipment.

Is the park entry fee included?

The $499 registration covers the items listed above. The State of Nevada requires a $15 non-resident fee per vehicle to enter the park.

Where do we meet?

We'll meet at the Valley of Fire Visitors Center at 8:30 AM. Exact meeting instructions and any last-minute logistics will be sent to registered participants before the workshop.
